And now for something completely different. 🙂 As you can see by my shooting style, I rarely shoot full-length images, hardly ever stop motion, and often opt for portraits and headshots that focus on the model’s eyes. However, for this series, model Jiajia (@jiajiadances) is a talented ballet dancer and we wanted to capture a series that had the soft intimate feel of portraiture, but also showed off her artistic mood and flow through dance.
In this series, I have a fairly simple two-light setup in front of a large black seamless backdrop from Savage Universal. The keylight is an Einstein e640 from Paul C. Buff with a large octobox that I feathered for a softer more moody look, along with another Einstein e640 in the rear as a rimlight with a stripbox and grid to focus the light just on the outline of Jiajia to capture her form and separate her from the black background a bit without losing that artistic mood I was going for.
Jiajia’s talent, form, and wardrobe really makes this series work as the flow of her garment almost appears as if it’s underwater at times, really capturing the mood and feel I was going for. I also enjoy how the color change of the fabric is a gradient that both captures highlights, shadows and the transition of light so perfectly! I really like how this series turned out, and sometimes breaking out of my traditional shooting patterns can be both fun and extremely satisfying when everything falls so perfectly into place.
