This series with Tracie was shot indoors in my studio in Berkeley, CA. For this headshot series, the goal was to achieve an artistic and almost cinematic color “pop” to the background for a vibrant headshot series.
HOW TO SHOOT & CREATE COLORFUL CINEMATIC HEADSHOTS

Normally, for different background styles or even for my colored gel portraits, I would swap out the background with a different seamless background color for different looks. However, for this shoot, the unique background was left as-is, and I actually used an unconventional crinkled material as the backdrop. The only difference between shots was changing the colored gels directed into both the background and the side kicker lights on the model. (See the sides of her face/hair for a twist on the colored gels applied in-studio.)
This is was a five light setup, where everything was left as-is, only changing the colored gels for different looks. As you can see, just swiping out different colored gels dramatically changed the appearance of each headshot, offering versatility and unique color combos on-the-fly. This unique lighting setup provides for vivid headshot that transcend a typical in-studio headshot.
